Rails, Crakes & Coots
Generally waterside living birds, except Corncrake. Secretive, except Moorhen and Coot, lurking amongst reeds or long grass. Short-tailed and large footed.
Coot - Very common, widespread and thriving waterbird. Resident breeders.
Competing males
Moorhen - Another very common waterside resident. Smaller than Coot, they stick closer to cover by the waters edge. They keep in touch with a loud, distinctive call.
Juvenile bird. Unusual to see them in trees.
Water Rail - Smaller than Moorhen and much more shy. They lurk in reeds and waterside vegetation, generally keeping well out of sight. More often heard than seen. They make very loud calls sounding something like squealing piglets. It's always a treat when you spot one come out into the open. The best chance of seeing them is in Winter when they are forced out into the open to look for food. They will occasionally visit feeding stations in Winter, furtively.
