Nightjar
What's going on here then, I hear you say. Well nightjars are fully nocturnal, and only summer migrants to boot. You're extremely lucky if you find one at rest during the day. They have excellent camouflage and so are rarely spotted, unfortunately. Plus they are very particular about location, seemingly preferring heathland. The one thing that can help you find them is their fairly loud and very distinctive churring calls. You soon know when you're in the presence of one. They feed on night flying insects, mainly moths. I was lucky enough to see the birds in the photographs whilst out on an RSPB guided walk at Arne Reserve in Dorset, specifically aimed at finding some. Makes an interesting evening's entertainment.
