Flycatchers incl Robin

We get two Summer migrant species plus the recently re-designated, resident Robin. They are insect feeders. The migrant species catching their prey on the wing. All are fairly approachable and charming little characters.

Pied Flycatcher - What a cracking little bird this is. One of my very favourites. I love to go and find one in Apr or May, after their return here to breed. The males are very striking, if you're lucky enough to get a good view. They like ancient woodland, normally close to water. Easiest to see in early Spring, before the trees are fully leaved.

Top row shows a male soon after arrival in April at RSPB Coombes Valley, Staffs. Bottom left is a female there in May. Finally a smart male at RSPB Ynys-hir, in May.

Spotted Flycatcher - Another species that has rapidly declined in number, sadly. A little plain, so can be overlooked, but they're adorable little characters. Catching insects in flight and returning repeatedly to the same perch. I couldn't believe my luck this year (2018) when I noticed a family of them right outside the lounge window of our holiday home. Made the holiday extra special.

Photo 3 is a juvenile and 4 a fledgling being fed. All taken near Sedbergh, Cumbria.

Robin - Until fairly recently the Robin was classed as a member of the Thrush family, but now as an Old World Flycatcher. These birds are such great posers, they have to be one of the easiest to photograph. Officially the country's favourite bird.
