It's difficult to arrive at a definitive list of British birds. As an RSPB warden once said to me, 'birds don't read text books'. Population patterns are constantly changing, if only subtly, and there's nothing to stop individuals popping up almost anywhere. The British Trust for Ornithology do publish lists but these tend to include rare sightings and occasional vagrant species. My list has largely evolved from the RSPB's list. This includes all our resident species, those that come here to breed, those that over-winter with us and those that routinely pass through the UK on their annual migration. I don't class myself as a Twitcher, as I don't chase rare, vagrant arrivals. Well only if they're within easy reach anyway. The target can change slightly but is circa 280 species. I now have 35 to capture. This gets ever more difficult of course as the number decreases, unless you get a lucky encounter. I try to combine far off birding trips with short break holidays, to avoid running up crazy mileage.

There's always something to look for with birds. In many species the male and female have quite different plumage, so it's nice to be able to see and capture both. Then there's juveniles, with their own distinct appearance. Then in the case of some birds, most notably waders, they change plumage colours and pattern between Summer and Winter. So to grab just AN image from each species wouldn't really be doing them justice. In species where there is no change I will display less images.
